Tom Brady: Patriots offense is 'off to a decent start'
By David Kenyon
The New England Patriots opened the 2015 NFL season with three straight wins and currently boast the league’s No. 1 offense, but quarterback Tom Brady isn’t hyping up the unit.
According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Brady cited chemistry and continuity as reasons for New England’s “decent” start.
“When you start fresh all the time, I think that can get challenging. I think passing offense is all about anticipation. It’s about trust, being on the same page. The only way to do that is to have experience. It doesn’t necessarily need to be together. If someone has a lot of years of experience in the league, you have a lot of belief that person knows how to get open in a pro-style offense against a pro-caliber corner or safety.”
But if the offense’s performance through three games is merely decent, the Patriots will be terrifying when at their best. Brady has thrown nine touchdowns and avoided an interception, guiding the defending Super Bowl champions to a combined 119-70 score.
New England has racked up 446.3 total yards per outing, soaring above the second-ranked Cincinnati Benagls (414.3). The Patriots also lead the NFL with 359.3 passing yards—which is another wide margin, considering the Atlanta Falcons are the only other team to average at least 300 yards.
Plus, Rob Gronkowski has 308 yards and four touchdowns, while Julian Edelman has 30 catches, 279 yards and reached the end zone twice. In addition to Dion Lewis’ 325 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, LeGarrett Blount scored three touchdowns during his 2015 debut.
It seems the only thing that can slow New England’s hot start is the upcoming bye week, but the Patriots shouldn’t skip a beat in Weeks 5 or 6 against the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts, respectively.
Love ’em or hate ’em, it’s a treat to watch Brady and his decent offense operate.
