Troy Aikman: Cowboys have more issues than not having Romo
Many have blamed the Dallas Cowboys' struggles in 2015 solely on Tony Romo's injuries, but former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman isn't one of those people. He recently questioned how good the Cowboys would have actually been if Romo had stayed healthy all season.
“It’s been debated all season long as to what impact Tony [Romo] would have had on this team or where would this team be if Tony had been healthy all season long. I don’t know,” Aikman said during a radio interview with KTCK-AM The Ticket. “I think maybe that Thanksgiving game kind of gave everyone a realistic outlook on that question. Maybe they would have won a few more games, and I believe they would have. But how much different would it be? What we’ve seen in the last two months of the season is that this team has more issues than who was their backup quarterback or who was their starting quarterback. There’s a lot to address once the season comes to a conclusion.”
Aikman's conclusion about the 2015 team is also supported by the statistics. After finishing with the second-most rushing yards in 2014, the Cowboys have rushed for just the 13th-most yards per game in the NFL. On defense, the Cowboys have been worse against the run. After allowing the 25th-most rushing yards per game in 2014, they have allowed the 16th-most in 2015.
On special teams, the Cowboys have seen a drop off overall after allowing top special teamer Dwayne Harris to sign with the New York Giants this past offseason. Harris had an impact as the Cowboys' return man and as the gunner.
