Why The Baltimore Ravens Should Sign Wide Receiver Michael Floyd

The Ravens have struggled at the wide receiver position and Michael Floyd is the perfect fit

After being charged with a DUI on Monday, the Arizona Cardinals have officially cut wide receiver Michael Floyd from their roster.

The cut did not come to a surprise to many. This is not the first time that the receiver has been in trouble with the law. In addition, the former first round pick out of Notre Dame has had a disappointing season this year and has only caught for 100+ yards once this season. This is a complete turnaround from the monster season he had last year.

As a result, he is now on the open market and could be a perfect fit with the Baltimore Ravens.

    Low Risk/High Reward

Now I know he does not have a squeaky clean record, but Ozzie Newsome and the front office should take a chance on this guy. It seems like he can be a low risk/high reward option for the Ravens.

The Ravens are pushing for a playoff berth and will most likely need to win out to make it. And let’s face it, the Ravens are not dominant in the wide receiver position. After an offensive explosion against the Miami Dolphins, the Raven’s offense was nonexistent on Monday night. Their leading receiver is tight-end Dennis Pitta and second best option is 37-year-old Steve Smith. Breshad Perriman is showing flashes of potential, but is still in his first real season in the NFL.

Let me put it this way, the Ravens could sign Floyd for the remainder of the season on a low-cost. Barring a complete breakout, the team would not have to re-sign him.  If he puts up big numbers, then the front office looks great.

He would fit perfectly into the Raven’s offense and could contribute immediately. The Ravens love to sign free agents, especially in the wide receiver position. If you want proof, ask Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Smith.

After the departure of Anquan Boldin, the team has been missing a big and physical wide receiver. At 6’3″ and 225 pounds Floyd could be that missing piece. Because of his athleticism, he can go up for jump balls and be a security blanket for Joe Flacco. With Steve Smith in the locker room, he could be perfect mentor for the young receiver.

Floyd is a low-budget risk for a struggling offense. Most of all, if he plays up to his potential, he can make the Ravens a legitimate playoff threat
