Will Chiefs move Marcus Peters to cover Antonio Brown?
Since his career started, Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters has intercepted more passes then anyone else in the NFL.
Quite the start to an NFL career. What may be something to watch with the Chiefs Sunday night game against the Steelers is do the Chiefs break protocol and have Peters follow Brown around the field or will Bob Sutton leave Peters on the left side of the of the defense, and mark Antonio Brown when he comes to his side of the field?
As it appears the Chiefs will be without Phil Gaines, more then likely leaves Steve Nelson to be the starter on the right side of the defense. That likely leaves rookie D.J. White as the nickel back. So it certainly appears the Steelers may feel the incentive to move Brown around and have him match up against lesser corners, putting the onus on lesser defensive backs to make stops. That is a lot of pressure for unproven Nelson and White to carry going into a big game that could carry playoff expectations.
I certainly believe that the Chiefs should use Peters to follow Antonio Brown. I’m not worried or overall concerned about the other receivers for the Steelers, namely Markus Wheaton and Sammie Coates. I am however very concerned about the big play ability of Antonio Brown and the
opportunity to put points on the board in a hurry. While I certainly believe the Chiefs should move Peters around, I don’t expect them to.
Derrick Johnson, coming off perhaps one of his greatest performances with the Chiefs, will likely need to play a big role on Sunday night if the Chiefs expect and hope to come out on the winning side. Running back Le’veon Bell returns to the starting lineup and is likely to receive a healthy dose of carries as the Steelers feature back. With a defense that isn’t quite up to normal Steelers expectations, keeping the ball and limiting the defensive opportunities is something one should expect. In that sense, Johnson will have to come up big in run defense.
If the Steelers are able to generate a consistent running game; and can use the play action and the boot roll outs, that will put a lot of pressure on the Chiefs defense and is likely a bad omen for the Chiefs outcome on Sunday.
For all the talk about the great performance the Chiefs defense put together last week, it needs to be recognized the Jets were able to fairly regularly move the ball before the Jets quit on the game and the score became out of hand. Yes, Chiefs had what felt like a bunch of interceptions in the end zone, but in doing so, means the Jets were able to get the ball there. While that worked last week, it may not work this week. Roethlisberger is a far better quarterback then Fitzpatrick.
Can the Chiefs defense do enough, keep up the momentum to from this previous week? We will find out. This is a very important game for the Chiefs, and could have playoff implications.
