Anaheim Ducks sign John Gibson to three-year contract extension
The Anaheim Ducks' goaltender of the future will remain with the team for an additional three seasons.
The Ducks have signed Gibson to a three-year deal, $6.9 million deal.
Gibson is entering the final year of his entry-level deal this upcoming season. He's set to make $695,000 if he stays in the NHL, with an additional $137,500 that can be earned through performance bonuses.
Gibson will remain a restricted free agent after his deal runs up after the 2018-19 season. In the final year of his contract extension, Gibson will earn $3.3 million.
The Ducks' goaltending situation is a bit crowded with new arrival Anton Khudobin in the mix. Khudobin was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes after the Ducks sent James Wisniewski to Carolina.
Whether Gibson plays in the NHL or the AHL this year is yet to be determined, but he remains as one of the top goaltending prospects in the NHL.
The 22-year-old 2011 39th-overall pick has appeared in 26 regular season games for the Ducks since the 2013-14. His first ever game for the Ducks was a shutout performance, blocking all 18 shots that came his way in a 3-0 victory against the Vancouver Canucks. Gibson became the youngest goaltender ever to record a shutout in his debut game at the age of 20 years and 223 days.
Gibson has a career .919 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average. Gibson also filled in as the Ducks' goaltender during the 2013-14 season, where he maintained his .919 save percentage and recorded a 2.69 goals against average.
