Brodeur now sees reunion with Devils as 'less likely'
After Martin Brodeur retired during the season following a stint with the Blues and took a job in the St. Louis front office, then-Devils GM Lou Lamoriello made it clear that Brodeur would have a place in the New Jersey organization whenever he was ready to return to the place where he became the NHL's all-time winningest goalie. A homecoming seemed likely, at least eventually.
But with Lamoriello having stepped down as general manager, it now seems a lot less likely.
Brodeur, in an interview with The Record, said the following:
"Especially with the change (the Devils) made, I think it's a great opportunity for me to take a step back and go somewhere -- or stay somewhere -- that I'll be able to learn and do things I want to do and try to learn as much as possible. ... But it's less and less likely it's going to happen in New Jersey for a few years, that's for sure."
And it doesn't sound as if the lack of interest is on Brodeur's part.
"I don't know the new GM that's there," Brodeur said, referring to Ray Shero, who was brought on by Lamoriello as his own replacement. "I haven't talked to anybody in New Jersey, actually. That's something that if they want to talk to me, I'm here. But we haven't talked at all."
Brodeur also said that he had not yet spoken to Lamoriello, either, following the Devils' front-office change.
So while it's still possible that things could be smoothed over and Brodeur could be brought back into the organization, don't count on it happening soon.
