Canadiens All-Star P.K. Subban accidentally gives baby a concussion
Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban can't seem to do anything right lately. The 26-year-old was trying to do something nice during an open practice Sunday when he tossed a puck into the stands for fans, but the puck struck a one-month-old baby girl in the head, according to a Facebook post from the mother.
The baby was reportedly knocked unconscious and was taken to Montreal Children's Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a concussion. A report from the Sporting News said she is expected to make a full recovery. Canadiens' Vice President of Communications Donald Beauchamp told TVA Nouvelles that members of the team have since visited the baby in the hospital.
Via a translation from the Sporting News:
"Members of the organization went to meet the family on Monday morning," Beauchamp said according to a translation from the Sporting News. "The players feel quite involved in an event like this. Whenever possible, they always try to be cautious when launching a puck into the stands."
While Subban can be a controversial player on the ice, he is typically regarded as a good guy off the ice. The defenseman even had an atrium at Montreal Children's Hospital named after him in September after he pledged to donate $10 million to the hospital over the next seven years.
But life on the ice has been rough for Subban and the Canadiens of late. The team is an NHL-worst 10-23-2 since Dec. 1 and slipped from first place in the Atlantic Division on Dec. 1 to sixth in the division as of Feb. 23. Subban is the team's leading scorer with 46 points (five goals, 41 assists) in 60 games, but he has not escaped criticism during the team's slide. Subban was benched for the final minutes of the Canadiens' loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Feb. 17 after his miscue led to Colorado's game-winning goal.
