Canadiens sign GM Marc Bergevin to contract extension
Montreal Canadiens owner, president and CEO Geoff Molson announced that general manager and executive vice president Marc Bergevin has signed a contract extension that will carry him through the 2020-21 season.
“I am very pleased to announce that Marc accepted a multi-year contract extension and that he will remain our general manager until the end of the 2021-22 season. This new agreement brings added stability for our organization and particularly for our hockey operations. It enables us to continue our efforts in giving our fans a winning team”, Molson said in a press release. “Marc is an excellent general manager who quickly made an impact in the league with his leadership skills and his ability to identify the needs and find the personnel to assemble a championship team. I am very pleased with his work and the results he has achieved since his appointment as general manager.”
Bergevin became the Canadiens' 17th general manager in their franchise's history on May 2, 2012. Montreal has made the playoffs every year since Bergevin took over the helm. Last season, his club finished with 50 wins, the most by the franchise since 1988-89.
Bergevin was recently called one of the most active general managers across the NHL by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Bergevin has conducted 22 trades as the Canadiens' general manager. One of his more recent moves, acquiring Jeff Petry from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2015 second-round pick and a 2015 conditional fifth-round pick, has proved to be a fruitful one.
The Canadiens are 141-68-25 since Bergevin's hiring. They are tied for the third-most wins since 2012.
