Capitals' Schmidt interjects himself into random snowball fight

With Mother Nature putting his team on ice this past weekend, Washington Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt opted to mix it up in the elements.

Schmidt capped brunch with a friend by making a few new ones in an unconventional manner - by involving himself in an impromptu snowball fight in Clarendon, Va.. The 29-year-old Minnesota native told NHL.com's Katie Brown that he had no issue interjecting himself into the fray.

"We had a snowball game, a miniature one. We went out to brunch and people were throwing some stuff around. It wasn't really our fight, I think we kinda just jumped in on one for a second. I just wanted to get a couple in there because we were sitting there making snowballs for a couple minutes, so I was like 'Okay, let’s go do this.'"

Schmidt eventually left the fight in his rear-view mirror and later found his way up a massive snowbank.

Hey, a little exercise after a meal never hurt anyone.

Schmidt will be back in a more traditional setting - a hockey rink - on Wednesday when the NHL-leading Capitals (35-8-3) host the Metropolitan Division-rival Philadelphia Flyers (20-18-8). Washington is vying to win its 13th consecutive home game to match the longest such streak in franchise history.
