Carolina Hurricanes Announce Traverse City Roster
The Carolina Hurricanes are headed to the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup in Traverse City, Michigan. Recently, the Carolina Hurricanes announced the complete roster for the team.
The team will be coached by Ulf Sameulsson, the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes AHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers. This will be Ulf’s first coaching experience with these players as he was signed after the season. Ulf was previously an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.
The team will be made up of NHL hopefully that have been drafted or acquired by the Canes through trades. The oldest player on the team is forward Mike Ferrantino, who is 23 years old.
The most notable players announced for the team are first round draft picks Haydn Fleury, Julien Gauthier, and Jake Bean. They will be joined by 18 other forwards and three goaltenders. Among the goaltenders for the Carolina Hurricanes is Alex Nedeljkovic, who played as the starting goalie for Team USA at the World Junior Championship.
Other roster highlights include OHL standout defenseman Roland McKeown, Hobey Baker finalist Andrew Potularski, and Aleksi Saarela. McKeown and Saarela were acquired in trades with LA and NYR respectively. Potularski was a free agent college senior who signed with the Carolina Hurricanes this offeseason.
Canes fans may also be familiar with Nicolas Roy and Sergey Tolchinsky who both have made strong cases to be called up for NHL play time. The full roster can be located on the Carolina Hurricanes website.
Not the Carolina Hurricanes First Rodeo
The Carolina Hurricanes are very familiar with the tournament and have been sending teams to Traverse City for years. The tournament is a fantastic opportunity for players to gain additional experience and confidence before going to camp.
The tournament is short and only consists of two groups of four teams. Each team plays three games to determine the group standings. The final game for each team is against the team in the opposite group with the same standing. The winner of the tournament is the winner of the game between both groups first place teams.
Look for the Carolina Hurricanes to perform well, with a majority of the players on the roster playing one or more of these tournaments in the past. Many of the players also have World Junior Championship or Memorial Cup playoff experience as well.
The tournament generally favors scoring forwards due to its short length. Forwards can make a name for themselves by scoring goals and getting eye popping numbers.
However, the defensemen in the tournament are unlikely to have any stat lines that jummp off of the page. Blue liners in the tournament instead look to show responsible positioning and the ability to make great first passes.
Hockey containing the Carolina Hurricanes logo is now only two short weeks away. Its now time for hockey fans to come out of hibernation and get excited for the season to come. The next step is training camp and the World Cup of Hockey.
