Chara on idea he's getting old: 'Kind of crazy isn't it?'

One of the knocks against the Bruins' defense this season is that the man leading the blue liners, Zdeno Chara, is too old at 38 years young. The 6-foot-9 behemoth had a difficult season last year after an early injury hampered his play throughout the middle of the season.

But as Chara enters his 18th NHL season, he is shooting down rumors that he is too old to lead a strong defensive corps.

"When I was 36 and I was a runner-up for the Norris Trophy no one said I was too old," Chara told The Hockey News. "Then I got hurt when I was 37, then I’m old. How do you get from Norris Trophy runner-up to ‘hey, he’s too old’, in six months? Kind of crazy isn’t it?"

Chara recovered from last season's torn ligament, but he was back on the shelf during the preseason after suffering an upper-body injury. The Bruins' captain is under contract for the next three seasons, meaning the Bruins expect him to be able to contribute at least through age 40. With the exception of last season, Chara has rarely missed significant time during the season due to injury.
