Opening has come to a close. The Colorado Avalanche are happy about the outcome of the first few games of the season. Their play has helped them remain a team to watch.

Its too early to call the Colorado Avalanche a contender. Last year they showed moments of being a good team, but other times playing below their capabilities. This year they already look like a much better team. At this point they have played teams that were the biggest winners last season.

The  4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night was pretty impressive. They played at a high level and kept the Lightning on their toes. Some are calling the Lightning one of the best teams in the NHL, if not the best on paper. So to beat them in shut out fashion is pretty impressive, one way to get people watching.

Their early success this season stems from offensive minded defensemen and their skilled core of forwards. The Avalanche are getting contributions from many sources, which is helping them win games. Goal tending continues to be an issue, though. Semyon Varlamov has been better this season but still shows difficulties. Calvin Pickard looks good, still has room to go.

Colorado is looking to be a legitimate success. So far their is promise and hope for this team. The games have been exciting to watch. They seem to have a chip on their shoulder — maybe that will take them through. There are plenty of players to watch this season.
