Coyotes' prospect Domi undaunted by diabetes
Arizona Coyotes prospect Max Domi isn't letting diabetes slow him down.
In fact, the 12th overall pick of the 2013 draft is living in the fast lane as part of a promotional tour with Bayer in support of type-1 diabetes awareness. Domi has spent part of this summer sharing his story and talking to kids about living with the disease.
"It's special for sure and it’s a huge honor. To be able to have an impact on all these little kids’ lives is very special to me and it’s something that I take a lot of pride in," the 20-year-old Winnipeg native told Sportsnet. "I was lucky enough to meet Bobby Clarke however many years ago and he had a big impact on me, on life in general and how I handle my diabetes. With how much I looked up to him, I was like, 'I can do something with this.'"
Domi discovered he had diabetes in 2008 while traveling to Toronto from a minor-hockey league tournament in Detroit. After consuming approximately nine liters of water or Gatorade, Domi visited a hospital and was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes.
Despite initially wearing No. 15 during some exhibition games with the Coyotes, Domi has changed his jersey to No. 16 in honor of Clarke.
A three-time Hart Trophy winner, Clarke wasn't deterred by diabetes and helped the Philadelphia Flyers to two Stanley Cup titles during his 15-year NHL career.
