Dallas Stars Are Three Weeks Away From Commencement

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The NHL is quickly approaching a new season, and the Dallas Stars are just three weeks away from preseason play. Their first game could prove to be an exciting one.

On May 11, 2016, the Dallas Stars played the final game of their 2015-16 campaign. In an embarrassing 6-1 loss in game seven to the St. Louis Blues, their divisional rival, the Stars were officially knocked out of playoff contention.

After a season that built up an extreme amount of both hype and hope, it was disappointing to see Dallas flounder so painfully. The offseason hit, and Stars fans still did not know what to think.

First, the stages of denial settled in. Fans did not believe that their favorite team, the one that had notched 50 wins and 109 points in the regular season, fell into submission as easily as they did when it mattered most.

Following that, sorrow showed up. Some tears were definitely shed throughout this past offseason.

Finally, the blame game started up. Stars fans looked for a certain aspect of the team to blame (goaltending, power play, and defense were just a few of the targeted areas).

But the thing that probably burned the most was the fact that the Dallas Stars lost to one of their newest rivals. The Blues worked Dallas into a corner in the second round and gave them everything they had, yet the Stars almost came away with the series win.

There were plenty of things to peeve Stars fans off. Brian Elliott standing on his head to keep the Blues alive on multiple occasions. Ryan Reaves blowing a kiss to the Stars’ bench. The Stars’ inability to score with their strong power play. And of course the two goalie tandem choking when it mattered most.

Overall, it was a disappointing and enraging way to go down. That loss only furthered the hatred that now brews between the Stars and Blues. Dallas has found their newest rival, and don’t be surprised when these two teams butt heads this season in a very physical way.

Before the regular season starts, we have the preseason to look forward to. Now of course, the superstars of the Stars will not be playing as a whole unit probably until the fifth or sixth game. But it is still fun to observe and see how some of the Stars’ brighter prospects play.

And surprisingly enough, the first game of the preseason has a big storyline behind it. In exactly three weeks (Monday, September 26), the Dallas Stars will take on the St. Louis Blues in Dallas, TX to kick off their preseason endeavors.

Sadly, the likes of Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza, Patrick Sharp, Johnny Oduya, and John Klingberg will probably not be in the starting lineup (at least not all of them).

But that doesn’t mean that the prospect Stars can’t put on a show against the prospect Blues. It doesn’t matter who is on the ice. All that matters is the name of the teams competing.

Expect the Dallas Stars to play with a sizable chip on their shoulder this coming season in all five games they play against the Blues. Expect a lot of the same from St. Louis, considering they know what to expect from the Stars. Whether it is the preseason, regular season, or postseason, rivalries always burn bright. Three weeks from now, we’re likely to see a new rivalry on full display.
