Detroit Red Wings Darren Helm, Mike Green off to great starts in 2016
The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators last night in their final opening night at Joe Louis Arena.
The Detroit Red Wings will be looking to make the NHL playoffs for a record 26th straight season this year, and if they do Darren Helm and Mike Green will need to contribute in a big way. So far, so good.. Last night the Wings defeated the Senators 5-1 at Joe Louis Arena, earning the club win number one on the season.
Somewhere at The Joe, general manager Ken Holland was smiling extra wide – not just because the Red Wings rolled to an easy win, but because his last second signing played a big part in the victory.
According to a Freep.com report, Helm scored two goals on Monday night against Ottawa, and he now has four points in three games in the early season. Sure, odds are Helm won’t keep up the pace of scoring more than a point per game, but the hot start is something the Red Wings were hoping for.
“I’ve never really been a guy that’s too focused on getting points,” Helm said. “When they’re not going, it definitely makes it a little harder on you. Right now, it seems to be working. I’m just focusing on things away from the puck that I need to be doing to be successful.”
Helm scored on a breakaway goal at the 14:15 mark of the first period to give the Wings a 2-0 lead. That goal was considered to be the game winner in the 5-1 final.
Defenseman Mike Green had the best game of his career from an offensive stand point. Green scored three goals, netting his first hat-trick of his 11-year career. Green and Helm were a two man wrecking crew Monday night, now the Wings look to keep things rolling this week.
The Wings have a nice stretch of home games over the next two weeks. In fact, seven of the next ten games will be played at Joe Louis Arena.
The Wings next game is against the New York Rangers on Wednesday, October 19th at Madison Square Garden.
