Don Cherry hits campaign trail for Josh Donaldson in Twitter rant
Don Cherry might work in hockey, but that doesn't mean he isn't up-to-date on all the baseball news.
Like many Canadians, Cherry has gotten caught up in the Blue Jays' hot streak of late, but when former Blue Jay Gregg Zaun argued that the Angels' Mike Trout deserves the AL MVP over Toronto's Josh Donaldson, Don Cherry couldn't help but chime in.
Zaun issued his opinion on Trout vs. Donaldson in a SportsNet broadcast Tuesday, saying, "It's really cute when the fans are yelling MVP at Josh Donaldson but that's your MVP in the American League right there, Mike Trout."
Cherry was not swayed by Zaun's argument, so he took to Twitter on Thursday to share his opinions, and like any Don Cherry rant, the result was magnificent.
Obviously, any good MVP argument begins with commentary on the clothing style of the man whom you're debating against as well as an acknowledgement of the other person's knowledge.
But then Cherry got down to business, and he clearly did some research as he provided strong statistics to back up his case for Donaldson for MVP.
Should Trout lose the MVP race, perhaps he can find consolation in this comparison to one of baseball's greats.
It's no surprise, however, that Cherry is backing Donaldson, as Cherry is a fan of all things and people who are Canadian, and Donaldson does after all play for a Canadian team. Plus, Cherry has been a long-time Donaldson fan, as he devoted precious time during a Stanley Cup Final edition of "Hockey Night In Canada" to urge fans to vote Donaldson into the All-Star Game.
