Ducks come up short in loss to the New York Rangers.
The Ducks sit at second in the Pacific Division standings. They were sitting in first in the standings for awhile during their win streak. They have had inconsistencies lately causing them to fall into second place.
However, they are only four points behind the first place San Jose Sharks.
All this means is they are 3 wins away from taking hold of first place.
In order for them to take hold of first place again they need to correct their inconsistencies.
It starts with defense and on the Ducks defensive end it starts with the goalies.
There have been games where head coach Randy Carlyle has played both goalies.
John Gibson and Jonathan Bernier have both shared time in front of the net.
They both have their off days as well as their great days.
Carlyle has played both goalies in one game multiple times. Just like in football, in hockey when a team loses the goalie is to blame and when they win the goalie gets all the credit.
However, for the Ducks, you can’t blame the goalies for some of the losses since they weren’t receiving help from their defenders.
One player said it best.
Both have goalies have had games where they make 30 plus saves, yet they still get scored on.
For example last night Carlyle went with John Gibson at goaltender who made 16 saves out of 19 shots on goal.
How did the fourth goal get scored, you ask?
The Ducks may have pulled Gibson and played another goal scorer in the last few minutes leaving an empty net.
Also, the Ducks offense has not been helping their defense lately.
They were able to get 44 shots on goal and only score one goal. That either means they are missing every shot or not taking high quality shots at the goal.
They weren’t even able to convert on any one of their four power plays they had.
The Anaheim Ducks will look to rebound in their next game on the road against the Buffalo Sabres.
