Edmonton Oilers: Patrick Maroon's Emotional St. Louis Goal

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:03 p.m. ET

After nine career games against his hometown NHL team, Edmonton Oilers winger Patrick Maroon finally scored his first goal against the St. Louis Blues.

Even more importantly, he had his entire family in the stands watching. His father, an avid sports fan, is a Blues season ticket holder. More importantly, his son was in the stands watching him, one of the only ones decked in an Oilers jersey at the Scottrade Centre on Monday. Anthony Maroon, of course, was sporting his father’s sweater.

After Maroon scored to tie the game at two in the third period, the crowd grew silent, but Anthony cheered loud, incredibly excited that his dad scored.

Though Maroon didn’t get to see his son’s reaction when scoring, he got to experience it post-game. His reaction shows us that behind all that tough-guy exterior lives a man with a big heart.

“It’s pretty cool. Pretty emotional,” Maroon told Gene Principe, tearing up in the post-game interview. “I don’t get to see him as much. It’s pretty special.”

Since being traded to Edmonton, Maroon has been a force to be reckoned with, and an excellent on and off-ice addition. This season, the 28-year-old has nine goals and 15 points. In his 50-game career with the Oilers, Maroon has 17 goals and 29 points and has become a great leader and tough presence on the team.

Maroon told the NHLPA that he looks forward to FaceTiming with his son, and that helps him maintain a connection with him, no matter how far away he is.
