Edmonton Oilers Trade Targets: Michal Neuvirth

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 2:08 p.m. ET

With the Edmonton Oilers tight in the post-season race, they should be targeting a stable backup goaltender.

Cam Talbot has played the most minutes of any goalie in the NHL this season, and he needs a capable backup to give him nights off. Unfortunately, Laurent Brossoit appears shaky and hasn’t proven his worth. Jonas Gustavsson was a disaster, as he went 1-3-1 with a save percentage of .878 and a GAA of 3.10.

Though Brossoit has earned a promotion to the NHL club, he has shown inconsistencies of a rookie goaltender. This season, Brossoit boasts a save percentage is .930 and a GAA of 2.75, which are decent stats.

However, with Talbot starting a variety of back-to-back matchups, it’s apparent that the team may not have too much confidence in Brossoit. Therefore, they may have to invest in a solid backup goaltender, and should look at Philadelphia Flyers netminder Michal Neuvirth.

Michal Neuvirth

The Edmonton Oilers sent two scouts to the Philadelphia Flyers game Thursday, which just happened to be Neuvirth’s start. The Czech Replic native has bounced around the league, but is a solid option as a backup for the Edmonton Oilers. Though he’s struggled this season, he boasts a career save percentage of .912 and a GAA of 2.68.

Neuvirth has played in the playoffs for three different teams and has a save percentage of .933 and 1.93 GAA in 13 postseason games. His playoff experience will be invaluable for this young team when they crack the poseason. Neuvirth can help Talbot and provide a reliable backup on nights when Todd McLellan wants to give Talbot a night off.

Neuvirth will be a UFA at the end of the season, so he becomes a low-risk option to help shore up the backup position for the Oilers.
