Fans toss burgers at goalie again, only this time one gets eaten
There’s no denying the impact 27-year-old rookie goaltender Andrew Hammond is having on the Ottawa Senators.
Through the first 14 games of his career, Hammond is 12-0-1, tied a 76-year-old record for keeping the puck out of the net, and is the main reason the resurgent Sens are only two points out of a playoff spot after Thursday night’s 6-4 win over Boston, the team Ottawa is chasing in the standings.
But perhaps nothing exemplifies the sudden love affair between Hammond and the team’s fans and players than “The Hamburglar” phenomenon. Shortly after assigning the moniker to their new hero, some Senator fans began throwing hamburgers onto the ice.
On Thursday night, one of Hammond’s teammates had finally had enough.

After the big win, Ottawa winger Curtis Lazar picked up a burger off the ice and ate it.

And afterward, a little advice for the chef.

While the Senators got the win, Hammond did look his most un-Hambuglarish on Thursday, surrendering four goals on 35 shots. It was the first game in Hammond’s career in which he allowed more than two goals, ending his streak at 12 and leaving him tied with Bruins Hall of Fame goalie Frank Brimsek, who began his career with 12 straight starts without giving up more than two goals in 1938-39.
"I said it (Thursday) morning, getting the win was a lot more important to me than the streak," Hammond said. "It was a weird game, a lot happened, and we just showed a lot of character fighting to the end."
