Flyers fans using GoFundMe to buy rival Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins have been bitter adversaries on the ice from the moment the teams joined the league.

Now, the rivalry has been taken to another level as a group of Flyers fans have started a GoFundMe page to purchase the Sidney Crosby-led Penguins.

Pittsburgh primary owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle announced the club's intentions to sell the team in June, with the asking price reportedly around $750 million.

The Orange and Black Pack, which is a Flyers blog, wishes to hit that mark so they can turn their Keystone State rival into something more to its liking. The site also would like to paint the entire inside of the Consol Energy Center orange and black and place a giant photo of Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux outside of it, among other interesting suggestions.

"We figure since the Flyers already figuratively own the Penguins, their fans might as well literally own them," the blog wrote.

As of Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe page has raised $1,469 - so there's still a mountain to climb.

In the event that the Philadelphia fans do not reach their goal, the group promises to donate 100 percent of the funds to the Flyers Wives charities.

As one might expect, the Pittsburgh faithful didn't take too kindly to the rival's creative plan. In fact, the Pensblog didn't hold back in its disdain for the idea.

"They're gonna have to install at least 10 more food joints so that Kate Smith can come back from the dead and eat cheeseburgers all game,” the Pensblog wrote.
