The Philadelphia Flyers are getting a bit creative in their bid to pave the way for the return of veteran defenseman Mark Streit and keep promising rookie Shayne Gostisbehere on the roster.

On Tuesday, the Flyers placed forward Sam Gagner on waivers to clear salary cap hurdles in relation to Gostisbehere and Streit. The 38-year-old Streit is looking forward to Wednesday's tilt versus the San Jose Sharks after being sidelined since Nov. 12 due to surgery to repair a pubic plate displacement.

Streit scored three goals and set up six others in 16 games this season for the Flyers, who will have eight defensemen on their roster should they go this route.

The 22-year-old Gostisbehere caused a stir with six goals and eight assists in 19 contests this season.

Gagner had been sidelined with a concussion since Nov. 23. The sixth overall pick of the 2007 draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Gagner had collected two goals and three assists in 18 games this season.

"It feels strong and my skating is strong. There are no restrictions at all and I feel comfortable. It's just a matter of getting my timing back."
