Flyers' Streit whistled for penalty while standing in penalty box
Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Mark Streit committed a penalty while standing in the penalty box on Thursday.
Yes, you read that correctly as the unusual situation played itself out during the first period of Philadelphia's 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. With the clock ticking down on his first interference penalty, Streit prepared to exit the box and play the puck as Buffalo captain Brian Gionta skated by.
A whistle was heard and Streit didn't have far to go to serve his second interference penalty. As one might expect, coach Dave Hakstol wasn't amused. Via NHL.com:
"Our penalty-killers did an outstanding job, but we spent a lot of energy killing penalties."
Although Streit nearly paid rent in the penalty box, the Flyers (24-20-9) were able to kill off all six of Buffalo's power plays en route to snapping their three-game losing skid.
