Frustrated Flyers hold closed-door meeting after 'unacceptable' performance
The slumping Philadelphia Flyers could be on their way to devaluing the importance of the "closed-door meeting."
The Flyers (5-7-3) shut the doors after getting theirs blown off in a 4-0 rout by the Colorado Avalanche (5-9-1) on Tuesday. The team's seventh loss in eight games brought about the second "closed-door meeting" in just 15 contests this season.
While forward Sean Couturier noted to the Philadelphia Inquirer that the message of the meeting was to "stick together", several of the Flyers admitted Tuesday's performance was unacceptable.
"It's not something we need to discuss here,” alternate captain Mark Streit told the Courier Post. "Everybody realizes what kind of performance we brought tonight. It’s unacceptable. Everybody’s got to be better and everybody’s got to be accountable. It was a really poor performance on our part."
The Flyers' anemic offense has posted just 1.80 goals per game, second only to the Anaheim Ducks (1.60) for the fewest in the league. Philadelphia does not have a player in double digits in scoring, with captain Claude Giroux leading the team with nine points (four goals, five assists).
The Flyers are also yielding an average of 34.3 shots per contest, second only to the Ottawa Senators (34.6).
