Hurricanes fans waste free hats after Jeff Skinner's hat trick called back (Video)
Carolina Hurricanes fans were a bit too quick to throw their hats on the ice after Jeff Skinner’s hat trick never happened.
Scoring a hat trick is an awesome thing. Even more fun than scoring a hat trick is watching all the fans throw their hats on the ice in celebration.
Carolina Hurricanes fans believed Jeff Skinner got a hat trick and started throwing their free giveaway hats on the ice.
There’s just one slight problem – Skinner didn’t score. His shot grazed forward Bryan Bickell, taking away his teammate’s potential third goal.
To be fair, everyone thought Skinner had scored. Hurricanes fans had every reason to believe he had his third goal of the evening. But as the video shows, his beautiful shot got a piece of Bickell. Bickell’s got to feel terrible, but not too terrible since his Hurricanes won 3-2 over the New York Rangers.
At least the hats were giveaway hats, right? The Hurricanes did the right thing by distributing most of the hats. Obviously, they couldn’t give back all of them. But at least they tried, which is more than most teams would have done.
Skinner finished the night with two goals, leading his Hurricanes to a win over the Rangers. He has killed the Rangers in his career, with 18 points against them in 23 games. Skinner has 10 goals and eight assists against the blue shirts. In six games this season, the Hurricanes forward has four goals and nine points.
He won the Calder Trophy at the age of 18 after netting a 30 goal season in 2010-11. In 424 career NHL games, Skinner has 147 goals and 129 assists for a total of 276 points. He often gets overlooked thanks to being in the same division as Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Claude Giroux. However, Skinner is still an excellent player who is quite underrated.
