Islanders tab McPhee as special adviser to GM
The New York Islanders named George McPhee as the team's special adviser to general manager Garth Snow on Wednesday.
McPhee spent the past 17 seasons as the general manager with the Washington Capitals before being fired in 2014.
"I'm excited to join such a storied franchise," the 57-year-old McPhee told the team's website. "The Islanders have a great young team and I'm looking forward to contributing in any way I can to help them get to the next level."
In his first season as general manager in Washington, McPhee helped the Capitals advance to the Stanley Cup final before being swept by the Detroit Red Wings in 1998. He also guided Washington to the Presidents' Trophy in 2009-10 and seven Southeast Division titles.
The 1982 Hobey Baker Award winner, McPhee played with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils during his NHL career before joining the Vancouver Canucks in his first management position in 1992.
