Islanders Win Thanks To Thomas Hickey Overtime Heroics

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. The New York Islanders beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime. A much needed win for the Isles.

After suffering a terrible loss to the San Jose Sharks their last time out the New York Islanders came back home to try to get back on track. Ryan Strome was a healthy scratch again, which sent IslesTwitter into a frenzy.

It does him no good in the press box, granted he’s not producing but Jack Capuano wouldn’t think of scratching a veteran but he’d throw Strome under the bus in a heartbeat.

Anyway, the Islanders got on the board first with a beauty of a goal from John Tavares. It was set up by Josh Bailey, who had himself a good night.

That was Tavares’ first goal since November 3rd. We get on the Islanders secondary scoring and rightfully so but it’s tough to win when your best player goes nearly a month without a goal.

That score would hold up through the remainder of the first period and the second as well. Thomas Greiss was really on his game tonight as he stopped 25 of 26 shots.

The one he didn’t stop was from Sean Monahan 5:51 into the third period. The Islanders offense pretty much went to sleep after the Tavares goal. The Isles would have to settle for overtime.

Who else but Thomas Hickey to net the overtime winner. The guy just has a knack for scoring clutch goals. He scored an OT goal last year to clinch a playoff birth for the Isles, everyone remembers his Game 3 heroics and now this game winner to go along with the many other heroic goals.

It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. We still saw no signs of intelligent life out of Jason Chimera, Andrew Ladd and the rest of the under-performing cast of characters.

It’s tough to celebrate this one too hard as the Islanders still showed themselves to be a flawed team. It won’t get any easier with Pittsburgh and Washington looming.
