Kessel family sells childhood hockey net via Craigslist
Pittsburgh Penguins offseason acquisition Phil Kessel hopes to score plenty of goals for his new team in 2015-16.
A five-time 30-goal scorer and former Olympian, Kessel had plenty of practice finding the back of the net while practicing with siblings Amanda and Blake in Wisconsin. Recently, that net was placed on Craigslist by parents Phil and Kathy Kessel, with Matthew Wallock becoming the fortunate new owner.
"I found a hockey net on Craigslist for my kids," Wallock wrote on Reddit Hockey. "When I went to pick it up, the seller turned out to be Amanda, Blake, and Phil Kessel's mom and dad. This was their net growing up."
The Kessels even went the extra mile - literally - after the net wouldn't fit into Wallock's Jeep, driving approximately 40 minutes to deliver it in person. To sweeten the deal, the family provided a couple of autographed photos of Phil Kessel and added that the net originally belonged to Bob Suter, who played on the gold medal-winning 1980 United States men's Olympic hockey team.
With three Olympians having tested their mettle on that net, the bar is set pretty high for Wallock's kids to light up the scoreboard.
