Kessel-to-Devils speculation debunked

Published Apr. 24, 2015 12:09 p.m. ET

Don't believe any rumors saying the Devils are interested in trading their first-round pick to Toronto for beleaguered forward Phil Kessel. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello shut down those rumors when he told NJ Advance that he hasn't seen a trade proposal that would convince him to surrender the coveted draft pick.

"You never say no because somebody could come up with something you can't say no to, or you have a situation like we had a couple of years ago [to acquire goalie Cory Schneider]," Lamoriello told NJ Advance Media. "Something like that just presents itself. Is there anything imminent? Absolutely not. Trading the pick is unlikely."

New Jersey will have the sixth overall pick in this year's NHL Draft, one Lamoriello called "one of the better drafts" according to NJ.com. Toronto will pick fourth overall barring an unlikely trade of its top pick.
