Lightning GM full of praise for Blackhawks' Toews

Published Jun. 3, 2015 11:07 a.m. ET

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman was a highly accomplished hockey player before transitioning to the front office. Yzerman averaged over a point-per-game throughout his more than 1500-career games, and he was a 10-time All Star and a three-time Stanley Cup champion.

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews looks to join Yzerman as a three-time Stanley Cup champion as Chicago enters the Stanley Cup Finals this season, but Yzerman already said Toews has a leg up on him as a player in the NHL.

"The reality is Jonathan's bigger, stronger, better," Yzerman told the media. "I'm not sure I could even take him in a race, either, so he's probably faster. Just a better hockey player."

Toews seemed flattered by the praise from one of the game's greats, but as always, he remained modest.

"I think everyone here knows that's pretty much untrue, but it obviously means a lot to hear any sort of praise from a guy like that," Toews said to reporters. "Steve is a very complimentary person, and I don't think he'd say anything less than that. I just take that with a grain of salt."

Toews is averaging just over a point-per-game in these playoffs with 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in 17 games. He also has three power-play goals and five power-play points. Toews is a finalist for the Selke Trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive forward in the league in the regular season.
