MacDonald on life in the AHL: 'The situation is what it is'

Published Nov. 5, 2015 11:13 a.m. ET

Veteran defenseman Andrew MacDonald is trying to make the best of his current situation.

MacDonald unceremoniously was placed on waivers on Oct. 5, nearly 18 months after he signed a six-year, $30 million deal with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 29-year-old Nova Scotia native is the highest-paid player in the American Hockey League, and that very contract serves as a stumbling block in being recalled.

On Wednesday, cash-strapped Philadelphia bypassed MacDonald and elected to bring up veteran Davis Drewiske from Lehigh Valley with fellow blue-liner Evgeny Medvedev nursing an upper-body injury.

"It's not gonna do yourself or anyone else any good to get (angry) that you are where you are," MacDonald told Dave Isaac of the Courier Post. "The situation is what it is. The only thing you can control is how you play and how hard you work and how you hold yourself off and on the ice."

MacDonald has recorded four points in eight games while serving as promising youngster Shayne Gostisbehere's defense partner.

Once thought of as one of the league's best bargains at the 2014 trade deadline, MacDonald quickly fell out of favor in Philadelphia. He sustained a knee injury early in the 2014-15 season and collected two goals and 10 assists in 58 games for the Flyers.
