Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen out up to four weeks
Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen will miss the World Cup of Hockey after suffering an upper body injury.
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a bold acquisition this offseason when they acquired goaltender Frederik Andersen from the Anaheim Ducks. Combined with the recent signing of Jhonas Enroth, the Leafs will go into the 2016-17 season with a new duo of goaltenders. Andersen was going to play for Team Europe during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, but after suffering an upper body injury, the Leafs announced he won’t be participating..
According to the Leaf’s statement, Andersen will miss anywhere from three to four weeks. He got injured on Sept. 2 during an Olympic qualifying match. Andersen will most likely be ready for the regular season.
Shortly after they traded for him, the Leafs signed Andersen to a five-year extension worth $5 million per season. Andersen had a .919 save percentage in 43 games last season for the Ducks. He will be going to a team that is still rebuilding. The soon-to-be 27-year old goaltender will be seeing his first season as the definitive starting goaltender after splitting time with John Gibson last year.
Enroth will likely help Andersen by starting roughly 20 or so games, but it’s up to Andersen to help the Leafs rebuild. Toronto’s goaltending struggled last season. With the loss of James Reimer and Jonathan Brenier, the Leafs have rid themselves of the two primary goalies from last season. Garrett Sparks will likely start the season with the Toronto Marlies.
Andersen was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the seventh round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He has a career 77-26-12 record in 125 games, including 114 starts. Andersen has six career shutouts with a GAA of 2.33. He has a quality start percentage of 59.6 percent. Andersen has shown a lot of potential over the past three seasons. The Leafs hope that his potential becomes talent.
