Mario Lemieux provides heartwarming surprise for child in Pittsburgh hospital

The young daughter of a Pittsburgh radio host got a surprise letter and gift this week, and it came from one of the city's biggest sports legends.

Darran Dunlap, the five-year-old daughter of 93.7 The Fan's Colin Dunlap, was diagnosed with leukemia back in November and is undergoing treatment at from Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Penguins' team president and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux, who knows the struggles of battling cancer, decided to reach out and support her fight.

Lemieux sent an unsolicited letter and an autographed puck to Darran in hopes of lifting her spirits. That letter was shared by her dad on Twitter, and you can read it in full below.

Lemieux was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma while playing with the Penguins in 1993. Not only did the cancer (and the aggressive radiation therapy used to treat it) threaten his career, it also threatened his life.

A gesture like this one is special when it comes from any prominent sports figure, but it seems even more special when it comes from a legend who has been there before.
