Mat falls from United Center ceiling during Blackhawks' game

Published Nov. 9, 2015 11:21 a.m. ET

The United Center traditionally has provided a safe haven for the Chicago Blackhawks, but the sky nearly fell on the home tenants on Sunday.

A sound-recycling mat attached to the roof fell to the ice prior to a faceoff with just under 13 minutes to play in Sunday's tilt pitting the host Blackhawks against the Edmonton Oilers. The mat landed just above the faceoff circle to cause a brief delay, but an official quickly disposed of the obstruction and the game resumed.

Undeterred, the Blackhawks benefited from a four-point performance from Patrick Kane (one goal, three assists) en route to a 4-2 victory over the Oilers.

Chicago (8-6-1), which improved to 7-1-1 at home, now needs to pick itself off the mat on the road (1-5-0).
