Montreal Canadiens Alex Galchenyuk Out Indefinitely

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Montreal Canadiens have said that Alex Galchenyuk will be out “indefinitely” with an injury suffered against the Los Angeles Kings last night.

The Montreal Candiens announced today that Alex Galchenyuk is out indefinitely with a lower body injury. The team said he underwent medical tests today in St. Louis, where the team prepares to face the Blues tomorrow night.

Galchenyuk will not be in the lineup when the Canadiens wrap up their five game road trip. The Habs have won two and lost two thus far, and will be without their leading scorer when they go for the win in the rubber match.

It appeared that Galchenyuk injured his knee when he collided with Los Angeles Kings superstar Anze Kopitar. The Habs eventually won the game 5-4 in a shootout, but Galchenyuk missed most of the third period. The incident appeared innocent enough, but the Habs 22 year old center was seen limping to the dressing room shortly afterward.

The Canadiens also said that Galchenyuk will be evaluated again in Montreal on Wednesday and that an update will be provided later in the week.

A long-term injury to Galchenyuk could be devastating for the Canadiens. He is leading the team in points with 23 in 25 games, and the team is struggling to score goals recently. Behind him, there are not a lot of options for point producers at center.

Tomas Plekanec, David Desharnais and Philip Danault are next on the Habs depth chart down the middle. However, none of them have reached double digits in points yet this season, and can’t handle the load of being a first line center.

The team saying Galchenyuk will be out indefinitely doesn’t give us fans much information. This could mean he is back in the lineup before the weekend. It could also mean he needs surgery and is out for the rest of the season. We have no idea at this point.
