Montreal fans now booing every time P.K. Subban touches the puck
The Montreal Canadiens are in the midst of a terrible stretch of hockey. The team has won just six games since Dec. 1 and lost back-to-back games against the Columbus Blue Jackets -- owners of the worst record in the NHL this season -- this week.
The Habs reached a new low on Tuesday night when fans began to boo Montreal favorite P.K. Subban every time he touched the puck following his mistake in the second period which led to a Blue Jackets goal. Subban did not try to escape the blame, however, as he told reporters after the game that fans should have been tougher on him.
Via the Montreal Gazette:
"I deserved a couple of boos,” Subban said after the game. “They should have booed louder, to be honest with you. I didn’t play well."
Many expected the Canadiens to struggle after the team lost goaltender Carey Price to injury in late November, but Montreal's problems extend beyond their own net. The offense has been lethargic, and the Canadiens have scored the fewest goals (46) of any NHL team since Dec. 1.
Montreal now sits three points out of a playoff spot only months after a hot start to the season in which the Habs went undefeated through their first nine games and were still in first place in the Atlantic Division as of American Thanksgiving.
The All-Star break will give the team a chance to reflect on what has gone wrong in the last two months, but the Canadiens will have to turn around their season quickly if they hope to regain their playoff position.
