New Jersey Devils could be revolutionizing season ticket packages

Many sports fans can be ritualistic when it comes to their teams, and season ticket packages reinforce that stability: fans sit in the same seats in the same section with the same number of seats for every game.

But some fans like change or want to spice things up a little, and a new season ticket plan from the New Jersey Devils could allow fans to do just that.

The Devils announced the Flex Membership plan this summer, which allows fans to put at least $2500 into an account and then choose the games they want to attend, the number of seats they want for each game and the location of their seats for a given game. Fans can purchase tickets during an exclusive buying window before the season, but they also have an option to buy tickets during the week of the game at reduced prices.

For example, fans can buy six tickets in the balcony for one game and two against the glass for a different game as part of their Flex Membership ticket package.

Fans who choose the Flex Membership option still get unique perks of season ticket holders, such as exclusive member entrances and concession lines, pre-sale offers for concerts and special events at the Prudential Center and access to exclusive player events.

The idea is the newest initiative by Devils owners to attempt to improve ticket sales, as the Devils ranked fifth-to-last in the NHL in 2014-15 attendance. They averaged 15,189 fans per game. Capacity at the Prudential Center for hockey is 17,625.

"For many potential customers, the challenge is time — not resources," Devils president Hugh Weber said to The North Jersey Record in regards to low ticket sales.

Weber told The Record that nearly 1,000 fans have already joined the Flex Membership initiative.
