New York Islanders Daily: Steve Bernier Signed To Two-Way Deal

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The New York Islanders signed Steve Bernier to a one year two-way deal. This seems to be a depth move for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The New York Islanders have a very crowded forward group at the NHL level. That’s why this move was a surprise and seemed to be out of the blue. Apparently AHL depth is something the Islanders needed this year.

They signed veterans Eric Boulton and Stephen Gionta to serve similar roles as Steve Bernier. The Isles must’ve liked what they saw out of Bernier last year. He had one goal and five assists in 24 regular season games.

Bernier also saw time in the playoffs, playing in six playoff games, but that’s a story/rant for another day.

This move won’t effect Mathew Barzal or Anthony Beauvillier, the two prospects on the team right now. Beauvillier has seemed to find his place while Barzal seems all but guaranteed to go back to Seattle.

If anything Bernier will only see time if anyone goes down on the fourth line. The Isles fourth line has looked good with Nikolai Kulemin slotting in for Matt Martin.

We are still talking about the ice rather than the on ice product, which isn’t good. They need to get their act together real quick, this is getting ridiculous.
