NHL Trade Rumors: Senators testing market on Andrew Hammond
The Ottawa Senators are reportedly willing to trade Andrew Hammond.
Life comes at you fast. After the 2014-15 season, Andrew Hammond was considered slightly less than a deity after leading the Ottawa Senators’ improbable playoff run. However, he hasn’t been able to replicate his success as the Hamburglar. Hammond has appeared in just two games so far this season and has a .791 save percentage in those two appearances. With multiple teams needing some goaltending help, the Senators are reportedly testing the market on him.
While Ottawa needs three goalies with Craig Anderson’s wife battling cancer, Mike Condon has done much better in his two games than Hammond. Condon has a .983 save percentage in his two appearances with the Senators. Ottawa traded for Condon several weeks ago to help accommodate Anderson.
Hammond likely won’t fetch too much on the trade market, even with several teams needing some help between the pipes. The Los Angeles Kings are fine for the time being because Peter Budaj and Jeff Zatkoff have been playing quite well as of late. They might be interested down the road, but not now. The New York Islanders would probably like to get something for Jaroslav Halak. While Halak would give the Senators another goaltender, they likely don’t want to deal with his contract.
However, there should still be some interest in Hammond. The Carolina Hurricanes need to go in another direction from their current goaltending tandem. Hammond would be a way to do it at a fairly reasonable price. Of course, the Senators would probably have to take on Eddie Lack or Cam Ward. Don’t be surprised to see the Philadelphia Flyers express interest in him as well. Both of their goalies will be free agents after this season. Hammond has a $1.35 million cap hit through the end of the 2017-18 season.
