The Detroit Red Wings open up the 2016-17 home schedule tonight against the Ottawa Senators and the atmosphere should be electric as Joe Louis Arena will celebrate its final opening night as the home of the Red Wings.

After a rough start on the road, the Detroit Red Wings have to feel good about playing a game in front of the hometown folks. The Wings are 0-2 on the young season after falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. Sure, that is not the ideal way to get things going, however, a win tonight would not only right the ship but bring some long needed confidence to this young squad – especially against a red hot Ottawa club.

According to a CBS Sports report, the Senators are 2-0-0 on the year after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday night, followed by a 4-3 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. While the Red Wings are 0-2-0 after two games, the jump in their step vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night just wan’t there on Saturday against the Florida Panthers.

Detroit’s offense was M.I.A. Saturday as they fell 4-1 to Florida, and the defense was very sloppy at times, giving away numerous breakaways and odd-man rushes. They will need to pick things up tonight with Ottawa in town and head coach Jeff Blashill knows it.

“We can’t keep giving up free opportunities like that. It’s nonsensical,” Blashill said. “That put us on our heels. I thought then we played to not give up chances and when you do that you’re tentative and we weren’t quick enough on pucks. Their second guy beat our second guy to too many pucks, so we didn’t spend any time in their zone.”

The Red Wings will face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden this Wednesday, however, they will finally get some home-cooking as they will play five of the next six games at Joe Louis Arena.

A win tonight would be a great pick me up for Detroit, who will be playing in the final “Opening Night at The Joe” in team history.  Next year the Red Wings will move into their new home, Little Caesars Arena.

Las Vegas odds makers believe Detroit has a good shot at earning their first win this evening. Detroit is listed as a -150 favorite, with the over/under total goals set at 5.5.
