P.K. Subban: 'Trade from Canadiens to Predators wasn't hockey trade'

P.K. Subban spoke to Sports Illustrated, opening up about the trade sending him from the Montreal Canadiens to the Nashville Predators.

The trade that shook the NHL offseason occurred when the Montreal Canadiens traded star defenseman P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber. It’s a trade which surprised many and the ripples of it were felt throughout the offseason. Subban recently confirmed to Sports Illustrated’s Alex Prewitt the trade was not a hockey trade — but in fact may have been one centered around personality.

While many believe the trade happened for hockey reasons, many also believe there was more to the trade than meets the eye. Subban has an outgoing personality and one many find arrogant to a certain extent. His at times polarizing personality makes him one of the most popular players in the NHL. Subban is more than just a personality, though, as he’s also among the NHL’s top defensemen.

The trade was one likely based on personality because the personalities of Weber and Subban couldn’t be more different. Subban is much more outgoing and wears his heart on his sleeve. Meanwhile, Weber is typically seen as being more of an introvert, though no one will accuse him of not being competitive or emotional.

From a hockey standpoint, the trade is a swap of top pairing defenseman. However, Weber is aging while Subban is in the prime of his career. Also, Weber has never won a Norris Trophy while Subban has one. It’s also a swap of franchise faces. Subban was the face of the Canadiens while many Predators fans don’t know what hockey without Weber will be like.

Subban confirmed what many believed: the trade had very little to do with hockey. It had to do with Subban’s alleged off the ice issues and the broken relationship between the front office and Subban.
