Philadelphia Flyers Should Pursue Jets' Jacob Trouba

Jacob Trouba wants out of Winnipeg and the Philadelphia Flyers should save him.

The Philadelphia Flyers already have a wealth of top-tier defensive prospects set to enter the NHL within the next few years. Ivan Provorov is expected to make the Flyers as early as this season and other youngsters such as Travis Sanheim, Samuel Morin and Robert Hagg likely won’t be far behind.

But why not speed up the process a bit by pursuing another young (and proven!) defenseman via trade?

22-year-old Jacob Trouba of the Winnipeg Jets is unhappy with his current situation and has reportedly requested a trade. Trouba’s displeasure has nothing to do with money as he simply wants a bigger role elsewhere.

Trouba is one of the top young defensemen in the NHL. He’s physical, has excellent feet and a powerful shot from the point. He’s also a right-handed shot, which the Flyers desperately need. At the moment, the only right-handed defenseman on the Flyers’ roster is Radko Gudas, who isn’t much of a point-producer. Trouba, on the other hand, would likely be one of Philadelphia’s top point-getting blue liners right off the bat given that he receives a top-4 role.

Of course, good young defensemen are hard to come by and acquiring Trouba’s services would cost the Flyers quite a pretty penny. Philadelphia does have the ammo to make a deal for Trouba, but the question comes down to whether they find him valuable enough to ship off one of their own cornerstone players in return. If Ron Hextall doesn’t believe so, the Flyers probably won’t even bother picking up the phone. But nonetheless, it would certainly be exciting to see a defenseman like Trouba with the orange and black.
