Former New York Islanders captain Kenny Jonsson was diagnosed with an infection in his small intestine earlier this month and is dealing with blood poisoning, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Jonsson, who served as the Islanders' captain in 1999-2000, was rushed to the hospital while coaching a youth hockey team in his native Sweden at the time of his declining health. His condition is said to be progressing slightly, according to the newspaper.

The 41-year-old Swede has lost a significant amount of weight, but is spending time with his family in his bid for recovery, his wife, Anne-Lee, told the newspaper.

A former defenseman, Jonsson was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a multi-player deal for Wendel Clark in 1996. The 12th overall pick of the 1993 draft, Jonsson collected 63 goals and 204 assists in 686 career contests.
