Reports: NHL will pay Gretzky close to $8 million

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:38 p.m. ET

More than four years after the Phoenix Coyotes went belly-up, Wayne Gretzky is reportedly getting his due.

And apparently, he was due a lot of cash.

According to multiple reports, the Great One has reached an agreement with the NHL that will pay him in the neighborhood of $8 million as reimbursement for money lost when then-Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes put the franchise into bankruptcy in 2009.

Gretzky had served as the team's head coach and head of hockey operations with the franchise.

When Moyes filed for bankruptcy, the NHL took control of the franchise. It was sold to a group of Canadian businessmen last summer for $170 million, according to USA Today.
