NBC hockey analyst Jeremy Roenick was recently asked which coach would fit best with the Philadelphia Flyers. He believes a good fit is currently employed as the Arizona Coyote's head coach.
"You want to talk about good coaches and guys that can get the team to play hard ... (Dave) Tippett does that," Roenick said. "You see what Arizona has done. They play really hard. He has less than zero to work with and he's made the playoffs a few times."
Roenick certainly has familiarity with both the Philadelphia Flyers and the Arizona Coyotes. He played 216 games over three seasons for the Flyers, and 454 games in six seasons with the Coyotes.
The Flyers have their eyes on several candidates to fill their head coach vacancy. Tippett, current Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan have already found their names swirling among rumors for the position after Craig Berube was fired on April 17.
Tippett still has three years remaining on the five-year contract he signed with the Coyotes in 2013. However, FOX Sports' Craig Morgan reported that Tippett has at least two different clauses within his contract that, if fulfilled, would allow him to terminate his agreement with Arizona. The first clause states he may leave Arizona if the Coyotes relocate to a different city, and the second clause allows him to leave if there is a change in ownership. Interestingly enough, Andrew Barroway bought a majority stake in the team earlier this season. There is no clear status as to whether or not that purchase by Barroway falls within the fine details of Tippett's contract clause.
It is not yet directly known if Tippett would even like to leave the Arizona Coyotes. He has coached the franchise for six seasons, the longest tenure since the team relocated to Phoenix/Arizona in 1996 from Winnipeg. Tippet has a 217-176-65 with the Coyotes, and he won the Jack Adams Trophy as the league's top coach in the 2009-10 season.
