Senators' Erik Karlsson: 'We shouldn't really have been in the playoffs to begin with'
Erik Karlsson sounded upbeat one day after the Senators' season came to an end with a shutout loss to the Canadiens in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs.
The Ottawa defenseman told reporters Monday that the team had to be appreciative of the fact that they even made the playoffs in the first place.
"Looking back, we shouldn't really have been in the playoffs to begin with," Karlsson said to the media. "The run we made was unbelievable and a lot of fun. Everybody grew enormously from that. That's what we've got to carry on going into next season."
The Senators seem to have a bright future considering many of the key players in the series were young stars. Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Mika Zibanejad all played important roles for Ottawa despite their age, and the Senators' goaltending seemed strong with Craig Anderson ready to pick up the pieces after 27-year-old rookie Andrew Hammond appeared mediocre in the first two games.
"We want to come back and do the same thing next year and be even better," Karlsson told the media Monday. "Everybody in here has really enjoyed their time throughout this year."
