Senators GM Murray reveals he has Stage 4 colon cancer
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who over the summer was diagnosed with cancer, revealed in an interview with TSN's Michael Farber that the disease is at Stage 4.
Murray, whose interview was aired Thursday, told Farber that he has colon cancer and that it has spread to his lungs and liver. When the Senators initially announced Murray had cancer in July, they did not reveal the type or severity.
"There is no cure at this point for me," Murray, 71, told TSN. "The word is that we'll keep doing chemo and hopefully reduce the tumors and the effect and I'll get some time out of that."
Murray said in the interview, which aired during the Senators' 4-3 overtime win in Edmonton, that doctors believe he had been living with some form of cancer for the last decade.
"The frustrating part — and I’ve said this to several doctors since then — is, 'How come there were no signs?'"
Murray, who has been undergoing chemotherapy since the diagnosis, also said he believes doing routine screenings earlier in life could have caught the disease at an earlier stage, but said he is now advocating prostate exams.
"I didn't have a colonoscopy, which I should've had," Murray said. "Like a lot of men do, I put it off.
"A simple colonoscopy, in my case, probably would have solved this problem I have."
Murray continues to serve as the team's GM and said he has no plans of stepping down.
