St. Louis Blues Morning Links: One Good Period Good Enough

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Good morning Blues fans! Well, another home stand is over and the Blues won way more than they lost, but there is plenty to worry about with a road trip coming up.

The St. Louis Blues took on the Montreal Canadiens and won last night. Neither team came forth with their best effort for an entire 60 minutes.

The Blues were facing the Habs’ backup goaltender and a team minus their leading scorer and fell behind 2-0. Flip that script and Montreal failed to contain the Blues in the third period after keeping them quiet all night.

On the plus side, the Blues continue to get some of their biggest players to step up in key situations. Jaden Schwartz scored twice again, which is something he is making a habit of.

Jake Allen also came up with some very timely saves. He will always get criticized by some, but the first goal against was a fluke and the second was a roofer that very few would have stopped.

So, if we continue to get the Snake we saw against Montreal, the Blues will be in great shape in net. The other spots are where we need to worry.

Lack of consistent effort and an unwillingness to keep feet moving are issues that keep coming up. Giveaways keep leading to odd-man rushes and for two games in a row the team’s efforts to become a speed team look like an effort in futility since they were nowhere near the pace of their opponents.

Going forward, as I mentioned in last night’s wrap up, these issues are eventually going to be more than can be overcome. The Blues have not played well on the road at all and now face four games away from home and against good teams.

How many times can we wonder if/when the Blues will fix their problems before we figure this is just who they are. Perhaps this road trip will change the outlook, because their current pace at home seems unsustainable.

The Blues have needed their defensive depth recently with back-to-back-to-back injuries to Robert Bortuzzo, Joel Edmundson and then Bortz again.  The depth will be tested as Bortuzzo’s injury may be more severe than originally thought.  (Post-Dispatch)

The St. Louis Blues may have won against Montreal in overtime. Regardless, the Blues never seem too comfortable in the three-on-three. It could be because they think of it as a crapshoot. (STLToday)

Normally people only associate a “bye week” with the NFL or football in general.  Recently, the NHL has picked up on it too, though it has the adverse effect of cramming more games together elsewhere in the schedule.  Apparently, that is not changing any time soon.  (ESPN)

Have a great day Blues fans!
