Vancouver Canucks F Anton Rodin Should Play with Sedins

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Vancouver Canucks are looking for a winger to play with the Sedins and Anton Rodin might be the answer.

The experiment of Loui Eriksson with the Sedin twins has largely been a failure for the Vancouver Canucks. Through six games, they have only managed to connect for three goals at five on five. They’ve also allowed two goals, which basically negates any offensive contributions they’ve made.

It’s probably too early to say the Sedins and Eriksson can’t figure it out this year. They were far too impressive in the World Cup of Hockey to be this big of a failure in regular-season hockey. However, as long as they continue to struggle, there will be discussion about who should be the new winger with the Sedins.

The Canucks tried out Sven Baertschi on the first line against the Los Angeles Kings and last night against the Anaheim Ducks. Baertschi was not a good fit on the Sedins’ wing. He looked awkward and looked like he didn’t belong on that line. He’s better suited for a secondary scoring role with the Canucks.

Another player that people are clamoring to see with the Sedins is Jannik Hansen. Hansen worked with them last year and there’s no reason to believe that it wouldn’t work again this year. However, as long as Hansen continues to contribute alongside Brandon Sutter, they shouldn’t be split up.

An option I’d like to see the Canucks consider is Anton Rodin. Rodin is currently rehabbing from a knee injury and there is no timetable for his return.  When he returns, he will likely need some games to ease himself back into the Canucks lineup.

When he gets back to full speed though, he could prove to be a deadly option with the twins. The Sedins are looking for a winger who is fast and can shoot. That is exactly why Hansen worked with them last year. However, those things are also two of the most obvious things that work in Rodin’s game.

Rodin won’t be gifted a spot with the Sedins when he returns. He’ll likely need to prove he can score with Bo Horvat and Baertschi before he’s even considered for a bump up the lineup. Don’t expect this change to be implemented any time soon. When it does happen, though, it could be really fun to watch.

In the mean time, the Sedins and Eriksson will need to figure it out. They’re too good to be struggling this much. They might not produce at the level they did in the World Cup of Hockey but they should be regular contributors. If they continue to struggle though, head coach Willie Desjardins as a number of options to consider for a replacement on their wing.
