Voracek scores in OT, Flyers beat Hurricanes 3-2
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Jakub Voracek's first goal of the season came at a great time for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Voracek scored 37 seconds into overtime, and the Flyers rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Saturday night.
''I almost forgot how that feels,'' Voracek quipped.
Luke Schenn and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers.
Philadelphia trailed 2-0 midway through the second period before rallying for just its second victory since Oct. 24.
Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask scored and Eric Staal had two assists for the Hurricanes, who have lost two straight and four of five since winning three in a row.
Steve Mason made 19 saves for the Flyers, but only faced three shots in the third. Cam Ward finished with 16 stops for Carolina.
''I thought we played well for the most part, and then didn't have the puck enough coming down the stretch,'' Carolina coach Bill Peters said. ''We were defending too much and eventually it caught us in the end.''
Voracek closed it out by taking a slap pass from Michael del Zotto, who was at the blue line, and tapping it past Ward for the winner.
''We kind of made eye contact, so I knew it was coming,'' Voracek said. ''It kind of hit my stick, and thank God it went in.''
That capped a comeback that began with Schenn's goal from an odd angle along the boards with 7:58 left in the second.
Simmonds tied it for the Flyers by deflecting Shayne Gostisbehere's shot past Ward with 3:09 remaining in regulation.
Gostisbehere ''handled that on his backhand and made a real good play to get the puck to the net,'' Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. ''Great play by everybody involved. Everybody had their part in that.''
Peters lamented the traffic in front of the net.
''That's how you score one,'' he said. ''When you haven't scored, or you're struggling to score, that's the area you need to get to.''
Simmonds' goal helped erase a Carolina lead built by Lindholm, Rask and Staal.
Lindholm put the Hurricanes in front with his second goal of the season - and first in 14 games - with 5:45 left in the first. Rask then stretched it to 2-0 with a power-play goal in the second - just the second by a Hurricanes player aside from defenseman Justin Faulk, who has an NHL-best six.
''Every game, teams are going to get momentum,'' Faulk said. ''You're not going to have a game with a full 60 minutes of momentum. We have to find a way to weather the storm and get that momentum back somehow.''
NOTES: The Flyers placed C R.J. Umberger and D Mark Streit on injured reserve. The team says Streit will miss six weeks with a pubic plate detachment that will be repaired surgically on Tuesday. ... Carolina has at least one power-play goal in five of seven games after scoring just three in their first 10 games. ... The Hurricanes recognized owner Peter Karmanos on the ice before the game. Karmanos, who has owned the franchise since 1994, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night.
